A legendary Traverse City restaurant has closed its doors after Schelde's served its last customers recently.
The business had been open for over 40 years.
According to the Traverse City Record Eagle:
"A Traverse City food institution has closed its doors. Schelde's Grille & Spirits at 714 Munson Ave., the site of a restaurant for more than 40 years, hosted its last customers on Saturday.
"Competition in this town has been very hard on small, single operations," Schelde's owner Mike Trubac said. "We just couldn't keep it going and had to close."
The site of the restaurant was where Howard Schelde first opened Mr. Steak in 1974. Trubac — whose wife, Kris, is Howard Schelde's daughter — purchased the restaurant from Schelde Enterprises in 2011. Trubac said it was tough to tell the employees of the decision to close. Schelde's employed about 20 people during the offseason.
"They understand that we did everything we could for them," Trubac said."
