The Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Department is warning people to be on the lookout for a scam artist pretending to be a detective so he can trick victims into giving him money.
Anyone with information on the perpetrator is asked to call 911.
According to WPBN:
"Deputies say a person received a phone call from a caller saying they were a detective from the Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office. The vicitm was then asked by the detective to withdraw funds from their bank, go to Rite Aid and purchase "MoneyPak" pre-paid cards, and then pass the account numbers to them over the phone.
Deputies say these scams happen in a variety of ways and can be convincing.
The Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office, as with most law enforcement agencies, does not call people and ask them to send money for any reason."
